Welcome to a year of opportunities and challenges

As we progress through the opening decade of the 21st century, there is a growing momentum throughout Northwestern University, a groundswell of excitement, energetic exploration, and confidence in a bright and challenging future.

We need to keep intensifying the intellectual experience for our undergraduates, both in and outside the classroom, and encourage the powerful integration of theory, creativity, and experience. We need to keep providing opportunities for our graduate and professional students to interact with the rich resources of the University and with the outside community. We need to keep investing in faculty of the highest distinction and provide ample support for their growth as scholars and teachers.

And to ensure that our scholars and students have the tools and facilities required to achieve at the highest level, we need to continue to support improvements to our infrastructure, which includes upgrading equipment in technology-intensive fields.

With the ongoing support of alumni and friends from all fields, we are moving the University to a level of distinction achieved by only a handful of institutions in the world. I am honored to help lead Northwestern toward realizing this vision, the logical consequence of the “highest order of excellence” that the University’s founders envisioned more than 150 years ago. We depend on the partnership of the University’s alumni and friends to help Northwestern continue as a leader in higher education through this century and beyond.
